The modern co-operative movement started in Rochdale in the 1840s. Today there are co-operatives across the world and in most countries.

Co-operatives started in the Potteries soon after the start of the Rochdale Society but early attempts failed.

By 1900 there were a number of independent co-operative societies in the Potteries area.

Silverdale Industrial Co-operative Society

This society started in Silverdale but soon had branches throughout the Newcastle area:

  • Butt Lane
  • Burslem
  • Crewe

By the 1980s these co-operatives had amalgamated into a much larger society United Co-operatives.
