Old photographs are a rich resource that help us to understand about our past and the lives of people who lived in the area in previous times.
This collection from our archives spans the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century and covers some of the hamlets and villages around the Audley area of North Staffordshire.
Many of the people were occupied in the mining industry as can easily be seen from many of the images. The industry was not without its disasters. The 'Minnie Pit' at Halmer End had a mining accident in 1918 which reached national headlines and prompted Wilfred Owen, the famous war poet, to publish his first poem. Aspects of this are within our archives.
Co-operatives were a strong part of the local community and images from some of the local societies are also available.
