STB vs St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic College
Round 7 of the ESFA U16 National Cup
Sir Thomas Boughey 2 vs 2 St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic College
On what was a boggy pitch at Audley Football Club, the players knew that the game was going to be tightly contested. St Cuthbert’s had most of the early possession looking dangerous down the flanks, however, the STB defence and Aaron Ramsdale in goal stood firm. It was STB who took the lead on the counter attack with Elliot Spooner beating the St Cuthbert’s defence to score the opening goal. St Cuthbert’s reacted to this by becoming more physical however STB again showed maturity and control as to allow this not to affect their play. STB extended their lead through Oliver Finney from the penalty spot after a great ball into the box by Elliot Spooner which was dummied by Joseph Bannister and Oliver Finney was brought down by the defender. Half time score 2-0 STB.
The second half was going to be tough to defend. The pitch was getting worse and the goalmouth was extremely cut up. A number of poor challenges were made by the St Cuthbert players which seemed to go unpunished by their member of staff. St Cuthbert’s got a goal back from a goal mouth scramble and then equalised soon after from the penalty spot after Daniel Taylor made a desperate attempt to stop the ball going in with his arm.
Extra time was played and although STB had a number of chances to score none were taken and Aaron Ramsdale was confident at the other end. The match went to penalties. After beating Haywood High School in the County Cup on penalties Mr Matthews was confident we would succeed.
St Cuthbert’s took first and missed the post by a foot. Callum Tunstall stepped up to give STB a 1-0 lead. St Cuthbert’s second player stepped up, Aaron Ramsdale made a great save to his left to deny him. Aaron then confidently scored his penalty to give STB a 2-0 lead. St Cuthbert’s then missed their third penalty; another great save by Aaron, this time to his right. Joseph Finney then stepped up and calmly slotted the ball in to the net to send the players into the Quarter finals of the National Cup.
An amazing result to cap off a mature performance in difficult circumstances.
Man of the Match – Aaron Ramsdale for an outstanding performance in goal.
