Mathematics

A GCSE Course

The course will cover all aspects of Mathematics, building on the skills acquired at Key Stage 3. Topics include Statistics, Probability, Number, Algebra and Geometry. Pupils will need to recall and use their mathematical knowledge. In addition, they will need to select and apply mathematical methods to solve problems and interpret and analyse problems. The course will also assess functional skills i.e. the application of mathematics to real-life contexts.

How will the work be assessed?
Examination: 100% There will be 2 examination papers:

Paper 1 (Non-Calculator)
Length: 1hour 45 minutes.
Worth 50% of the final mark.

Paper 2 (Calculator)
Length: 1 hour 45 minutes.
Worth 50% of the final mark.

Are there different levels of entry? We aim to give the pupils the best opportunity we can to gain as much from the course as possible. Therefore the choice of entry level is left until as late as possible in Year 11.

Foundation Tier
This provides a basic grounding in Mathematics and is aimed at pupils working towards GCSE grades C to G.

Higher Tier
This level provides training in the very advanced skills often needed by those wanting to study Mathematics or Sciences at Further Education. This prepares pupils to achieve grades A* to D.

An A.S. Exam
A.S. is the first half of A-Level and will be offered in Year 11 to those pupils who have taken their GCSE Mathematics at the end of Year 10 and gained a high grade. The work is divided into 3 modules. The first is examined in January of Year 11, and the other two are examined in the summer of that year.
