Year 8 Projects

Note Holder

In this project you will make a note holder that you can use at home.

  • You will design and make the product yourself.
  • You will be working with a man made board called medium density fibreboard. This material can be used like natural wood and it is easier to work with than natural timber.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned how to:
    • design a product so that it works and looks attractive
    • safely use a bench drill
    • safely use a coping saw and how to change the blade.

Pewter Jewellery

In this project you will make an item of jewellery in the Art deco style and package your product.

  • You will design and make the product, the packaging and a mould that you will use to create the product.
  • You will be working with MDF, Pewter (a silver coloured metal), acrylic sheet and a variety of packaging materials.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned how to:
    • use the Art Deco style to design your piece of jewellery
    • design a piece of jewellery
    • design packaging for your product
    • work with mdf to create a mould that you will use to make your piece of jewellery
    • work with molten pewter to cast your product
    • work with files and abrasives to finish your product
    • design packaging for your product
    • work with paper and card to make your packaging

Moisture sensor

In this project you will make a moisture sensor using a printed circuit board and different components. Your sensor will be able to tell you when your plant needs watering, a perfect present for the gardener in your family!

  • You will design and make the outer casing to house the electronic device and also provide instructions so people can use the product.
  • You will work with a printed circuit board where electronic components will need to be soldered into place to allow the product to work.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned:
    • What a printed circuit board is and common products they are used in
    • The functions of specific electronic components and how they work
    • How to use a soldering iron
    • How to manipulate card

Alessi project

  • In this project you will learn about a design house that produces unique, outgoing designs, specialising mainly in kitchen equipment.
  • You will learn basic design skills such as drawing styles, adding colour and the importance of annotation leading onto you designing the most interesting and experimental watches you can think of!
  • You will use key designers and designs from Alessi to help inspire your ideas so your watch will fit right into the range!
  • By the end of this project you will have learned:
    • Different drawing styles and why we use each
    • What is meant by the term ‘rendering’
    • About the Alessi design house
    • How to research into designers
    • About the importance of mood boards and how they help influence your designs
