Year 7 Projects

Perpetual Calendar

  • In this project you will make a calendar that will show the date of any day in the year.
  • You will design the calendar and we will give you all the measurements you need to make the product.
  • You will work with a natural wood called planed square edge Pine. Our timber merchant will machine the wood so that all the edges are square and the surfaces are smooth.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned how to:
    • accurately mark out and cut Pine using a Tenon saw
    • use sanding machines safely to create a good surface finish
    • use Acrylic paints to decorate your product.

Wind Chime

  • In this project you will make a wind chime that you can use at home.
  • You will design and make the product yourself.
  • You will be working with acrylic sheet, wire and aluminium tubing. All these materials are weatherproof so that you can hang your finished product outside.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned how to:
    • design a wind chime that works and looks attractive
    • accurately mark out and cut acrylic sheet
    • accurately mark out and cut aluminium tubing
    • use a bench drill to form holes in tubing
    • use a coping saw to cut acrylic sheet.

Mini Torch

  • In this project you will make a mini torch using a simple button cell circuit.
  • You will design and make the product yourself.
  • You will be working with basic electronic components, such as a button cell and LED. You will present this circuit within a casing made from plastic.
  • By the end of this project you will have learned:
    • To design products using a design brief
    • The functions of basic electronic components
    • How to make an electronic circuit including a switch
    • Shaping and forming plastic and foam

Marketing Group Project

  • In this project you will advertise and promote a new business adventure for a sandwich company.
  • You will work together in small teams and design everything from the company name to the menu you are going to offer and even the uniform your staff will have to wear!
  • By the end of this project you will have learned:
    • To work together as a group
    • What ‘brand identity’ is
    • Ways to advertise a business
    • About colour theory and what moods / feelings colours can create
