Young Voices 2016
On Thursday 3rd March we took 16 very excited pupils along with some year 5 and 6 Woodlane Primary pupils to perform in the massed choir event Young Voices 2016, at the Manchester Arena.
This is an event where many primary and secondary schools come together to perform in an incredible venue, such as the Manchester Arena, sing music together and dance repertoire that they have been preparing for months in their individual schools.
This year’s music was just as good as in previous years. We performed music from ‘Chatanooga Choo Choo’ to ‘Thinking Out Loud’ by Ed Sheeran and gospel classics such as ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ to ‘Baggy Trousers’ by Madness.
The pupils once again thoroughly enjoyed the experience, taking in the vast size of the arena, the opportunity to sing with 7886 other singers and the professional quality production and live musicians on stage. It was breathtaking at times, and the pupils took it all in their stride.
This year Laura Wright performed with the YV Choir. She was awarded BBC Radio 2 Chorister of the Year and has also performed in the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2015. Tom Billington also performed; his second year with YV. He is a solo male artist, having toured with bands such as Razorlight and the Killers. The pupils especially enjoyed watching the performances of the Beatbox Collective. This group was recently crowned 2015 World Beatbox Champions and pushed the boundaries of the human vocals to the limit with the use of only a simple microphone.
As this year was the 20th anniversary of the Young Voices Massed Choir event, we also had a special guest performance from the 2008 winner of the X factor. She is currently starring as Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard musical and has also received 3 Brit award nominations in the past. Guessed it yet? She is indeed, Alexandra Burke.
The STB Harmonize pupils gave up their lunchtimes and afterschools in the run up to the event, busily practising dance moves and learning lyrics. Miss Miller and Mrs Trender would like to say a HUGE well done to all of the girls involved, it was a very tiring but rewarding day, and we look forward to attending the event again next year.
